Introduction

Introduction

The Crabtree letters are a fictionalized account of letters written by a missionary couple in Africa in the 1900s - the Reverend William Arthur Crabtree and his wife Ethel Bronwen Crabtree from the heart of Africa.

They are meant to serve as a devotional reflection, a historical remembrance and to paint a picture of the life of a missionary. They are anchored in the verse:

“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news...”
- Isaiah 52:7

The letters - though imagined - are true in spirit. They reflect the sacrifice, faith, pain, and victory that come when the gospel enters a new place. May these pages remind us that God still uses willing feet, and the Spirit still speaks — even through cracked lips and worn-out shoes.

These letters reflect what life might have been like: the emotional and spiritual toll of mission work, the cultural exchanges, the challenges of sickness and distance, the surprising joy of seeing hearts open to the Gospel, and the small domestic moments that likely shaped history.
