Are You Insane, or Just Foolish? (Or Both?)

Are You Insane, or Just Foolish? (Or Both?)

By Pastor Dickson Wasake  ·  Senior Pastor, OurTestimony.org

I recently spoke with a family member who was slightly drunk at the time. He was shocked to see me washing dishes as we spoke. He said he was "too proud" to wash dishes. I told him we do not have maids here — who was I going to leave it to, my tired wife who works long hours while I work from home?

It got worse. He is out of work, and when I suggested he volunteer somewhere to gain the skills he needs to eventually get a good job, he said I had "abused him." He said he was too proud to volunteer.

It got even worse. A woman likes him and wants to marry him, but when she says things like "take an Uber and come meet me," he goes silent and backs away because he is broke. I told him a genuine person will still like you — why not just be honest and say you are down on your luck but will rise again? Same answer: "I cannot. I am too proud."

It got even more disturbing. He told me another family member should get a side relationship because his wife has not yet given him a child. He could not see the trauma of infidelity. He only saw that having a son was more important than faithfulness, love, and family.

I could not believe what I was hearing. Have I really become what the Lord Jesus said — "in the world but not of the world"?

It reminded me of something a motivational speaker once said at a talk I attended: "If you keep doing the same thing but expect things to change, that is insanity."

The Bible addresses this directly:

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God."

— Romans 12:2 BSB

This verse shows two things: the world thinks in a way you must not imitate, and you need to regularly renew your mind through the Bible if you are to be transformed.

And here is the reward for the humble:

"God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth."

— Matthew 5:5 NLT

The humble — the meek — will inherit the earth. That means they will rule over it. The true rulers are humble. So will you change your mindset, or remain insane? I am honestly not sure what the difference is between insanity and foolishness in this context.

Lord Jesus, help us all. Stay well, stay humble, keep reading your Bible. Maranatha!
