Why Do I Celebrate Holy Communion? A Personal Testimony

Why Do I Celebrate Holy Communion? A Personal Testimony

By Pastor Dickson Wasake  ·  Senior Pastor, OurTestimony.org

— #TestimonySunday

Most Christians know that Holy Communion, together with Baptism, is one of the two things the Lord Jesus commanded us to do. But for me, it is much more than a command I read about in church. I want to share the personal story of why I, Wasake, hold especially fast to Holy Communion.

The Commander of Heaven's Armies

In the first year after I got saved — or rather, returned as a prodigal son after twenty years of wild living — I had been reading my Bible consistently for about five months. Then, about one week before my marriage to my now wife Brenda, I read the following:

"Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?" "Neither," he replied, "but as commander of the army of the Lord I have now come." Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, "What message does my Lord have for his servant?" The commander of the Lord's army replied, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy." And Joshua did so."

— Joshua 5:13–15 NIV

When I finished reading, almost instantly I heard the Lord speak. He told me that on the night of our wedding, Brenda and I must take Holy Communion — and that he would be there with us, the Commander of Heaven's Armies. We were to take off our shoes, for we would be on holy ground.

Our Wedding Night

Both Brenda and I felt it, and we will never forget the manifest presence of the Lord that night — what some call "Kabod," the heavy weight of God's glory when he appears.

After all the activities of the wedding day had ended, he consecrated us — not only for our marriage, but for military service in his holy army. The presence of the Lord was so heavy. Even now, all these years later, I am still overwhelmed when I remember it. That is why Holy Communion is not just a ritual or a church command for me. It is a very personal command from my Lord.

How About You?

If you want to thrive in the Christian life, ask the Lord to give you personal revelations of the sacraments he gave the Church. These personal encounters will help you stand strong in your convictions, even when storms come.

Confirmation That the Bible Is Real

For me, the Christian life that Jesus described in the Gospels, and that the Holy Spirit confirmed throughout the rest of Scripture, is real and true. Here is how the Lord has confirmed it to me personally:

1.  Fasting — The first time I fasted for three days dry, I received a direct command from the Holy Spirit.

2.  Giving — I received a personal urging — a warning — from the Lord when I was not giving. That is how I began giving faithfully.

3.  Baptism — I felt a personal urge from the Spirit and ended up writing a ten-page letter to my workmates about why I was being baptised.

4.  Holy Communion — I received a word from the Lord himself, as I have narrated here.

5.  The Rock — I saw a dream of a rock falling and covering the whole world, confirming to me that the Book of Daniel is true (Daniel 2:34–45).

What Is the Connection Between These Revelations and Bible Reading?

Most of these personal revelations came during my daily devotionals — reading my Bible and praying. They happened on regular days. The Lord often appears in ordinary circumstances. So I encourage you: keep doing your daily devotionals and spiritual disciplines — fasting, praying, giving, communion. As you do, the Lord will suddenly appear and give you a revelation.

Lord my God — you who have appeared to me and confirmed that the Holy Scriptures are true — give your people many confirming proofs and signs to help them know that what they are reading in the Bible is alive and true and practical today. Give them the gift of your presence. Give them the gift to hear your voice. I thank you that you have heard me and answered. In your name Jesus I have prayed. Amen.

Maranatha!
